Batch rename files on Mac
Give project files clear names without working through them one at a time. Review your selection and proposed names together in FilePilot. Start with a small sample group before working on an entire folder.

Use a bounded request such as “Add the project name and a sequence number to the selected images.” Before replacing a vague name such as Brief-final-v2.pdf, decide whether that file really is the final version.
Why review first?
Similar content can lead to similar name suggestions. Review helps identify collisions and an incorrect selection. Keep an independent backup before experimenting on an important project.
How to use it
- Select the files to work on. For the first attempt, use a separate sample folder and a few files so the scope stays clear.
- Open Rename, or press Option + Space and describe the naming task. Prepare the required local model if using AI suggestions.
- Review old and proposed names. Pay particular attention to file extensions, duplicate names and the correct target folder.
- Apply only the changes you approve. Check names and file opening in Finder afterward; expand to the full folder only when the sample result is suitable.
Scope and considerations
Renaming a file does not convert its format. Projects, media and design apps may need their file references updated after names change. AI suggestions are not a guarantee of accuracy.
